I, Doris, arrived in Alaska mid-June of 1960, as a newly accepted missionary with Arctic Missions, Inc.
I was not seeking adventure, but was very sure of my calling! Had I known the true length of God’s assignment, I would have undoubtedly questioned the Lord! In my early twenties, and with open doors before me, I truly wanted to go forward. Yet it was hard to leave family and friends.
Letter writing was important, and mail planes seemed few and far between. Now days we have phones and computers! Most of my early letters were to my mother, who would share them with my siblings. Incoming letters would occasionally prompt a poem. Poetry was a creative outlet; a way to share my heart! Also, I still had my sense of humor, which was needed in writing my brother Allen! Fifty years later, I even tried my hand at writing songs.
My first book was started in 2011, then set aside for more pressing needs. I picked up the project again in the fall of 2018. Using stored notes and letters, I went on to complete two volumes in this series. They were published in February and March of 2019.
My goal is a series of same-sized books titled This Side of the Past, each with its own subtitle. Pilot friend and skilled artist, Jeff W. Disney paints the cover page for each book.
Let’s enjoy the privilege of keeping in touch. May your heart be kept in perfect peace with your mind stayed on Him. “In the LORD is everlasting strength.” Isaiah 26:3-4 (NKJV)
